Named by the English magazine Gramophone in 2011, as one of the ten "icons of tomorrow" young conductors, Diego Matheuz, with only 27 years, was appointed Principal Conductor of Teatro La Fenice until 2015. From 2013 to 2016, Diego was the Principal Guest Conductor of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, in Australia, and since 2015 he is the Principal Conductor of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. From the beginnings, Mr. Matheuz received the support and guidance of Claudio Abbado, his mentor.

 

Diego Matheuz is invited to lead important orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, with whom he conducted La Traviata at the Hollywood Bowl; The BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Birmingham, the Royal Philharmonic, the National Arts Centre of Canada, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In Italy, the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra of the Teatro Regio, the Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and the orchestra of La Scala, in Milan. In Austria, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. In France, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the Orchestre National de Lyon. In Switzerland, the Philharmonia Zurich, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the Symphony Orchestra Basel. In Japan, at the Saito Kinen Orchestra of Seiji Ozawa, with which he made an Asian tour, and the Tokio NHK. In Spain, he performed with the Spanish National Orchestra and Choir, and the Symphonic Orchestras of Barcelona, Castilla y León and Valencia, among others.

 

Renowned soloists have worked under his baton: Ray Chen, Javier Perianes, Saleem Ashkar, Nicola Benedetti, Anna Tifu, Eva Mei, Maxim Mirinov, Pretty Yende, Roberto de Candia, Valeriano Lanchas. In the last edition of the ECHO Klassik awards, Diego Matheuz conducted the Konzerthausorchester Berlin with some of the outstanding awarded artists of that night: Anna Netrebko, Khatia Buniatishvili, Martin Frost, and Andrea Bocelli.
